South Sudan – Proclaiming the Gospel in Tonj: Don Bosco Radio since 2010

07 April 2022

(ANS – Tonj) – Don Bosco Radio 91.0 FM was a dream of Fr Cyril Odia, SDB, and came into reality on 5th February 2010. Fr Cyril was the first director of Don Bosco Radio.

The motto of the radio station is "Proclaim the Gospel", hence all the programmes and broadcasts centred on proclaiming the Gospel. It is one of the first radio stations in Tonj. And it has been one of the best radio stations of CRN (Catholic Radio Network) in South Sudan among the 10 other Catholic community radio stations in South Sudan because of the content of the programmes that are broadcasted and the languages. It broadcasts 15 hours per day in 5 languages (English, Arabic, Dinka, Jur, and Bongo). Currently, its coverage is in the 90 to 120 kilometres range and it can be increased to more than 200 kilometres if there is a power supply.

The Radio Station connects all the Salesian sectors such as Parish, Secondary School, Primary School, Hospital, and Festive Oratory in the Mission in Tonj.

1. As its motto states, the Radio Station proclaims the Gospel throughout its programmes. The daily mass of the Parish is broadcasted, besides the Angelus, Rosary, Divine Mercy chaplet, Catholic Matters, Marian Talks, Catechism, and Good Night Talks. Although secular music is also played during certain hours on the radio shows, 90% of the music is Gospel music.

2. It has programmes featuring the voice of kids and education which involves both the secondary and primary schools. Parents and the pupils of the schools receive all the school communications through our Radio.

3. Programmes like Youth Link and Sports involve the oratory of the mission.

4. Programme of Health matters, Gender-based violence, and Family issues connect the Hospital with the Radio.

In addition to these, all the Salesian outstations are connected with the Radio for spiritual matters, News, and other cultural programmes.

The Radio has 14 staff members and moreover is self-sustainable. Aided programmes also come through CRN and other NGOs. The local programme from the government and announcements are enough to meet and cover the daily running expense of the radio station.

The dreams of Don Bosco Radio in the 12 years to come is to open parallel transmitters in all the Salesian communities in South Sudan. It will enhance its capacity to connect all our young people and eventually we can proclaim the Gospel throughout South Sudan. It will be an efficient tool to bring peace among the tribes.

“As we train our students in media, journalism, and mass communication in Tonj on a smaller scale we can extend this forum to many more young people of our centres,” Fr. Tamil Selva, from Tonj mission, states. “We will be setting up a production centre that will keep the South Sudan cultural dramas and music alive. Since we are already connected with many tribes in South Sudan we can very well preserve the heritage of the country.”
