Ukraine - Stories of hope and solidarity in the Easter season

22 April 2022

(ANS - Birbrka) - The healthcare situation in Ukraine, almost two months after the beginning of the war, remains dramatic. For this reason, in recent weeks, Fr Josef Nuckowski, SDB, had asked for help in a video to have an ambulance delivered to the hospital of Birbrka. The "Bridge of Life" Foundation, operating in the United States, after hearing the appeal, promptly contacted Fr Josef and began looking for a vehicle.

After the appropriate checks and following a careful search, two ambulances were purchased from Serbia. The vehicles were then loaded with medical devices and medicines, specifically requested from Ukraine. Then, after obtaining permission to leave from the Ukrainian embassy in Serbia, two Serbian drivers drove the ambulances to Ukraine. The journey was not without difficulties, but in the end, they managed to reach their destination. The medicines were delivered to the mayor of Birbrka, who gratefully received all the material.

A similar story comes from Warsaw, where three containers full of medicines have been delivered, this time by air, thanks to the support and coordination of "Salesian Missions", the Salesian Mission Office based in New Rochelle, USA.

Moreover, these days, the coordination team of Salesian activities in the territories involved has not forgotten the Easter celebrations, offering the remaining families a moment of joy, on the occasion of the most important and solemn feast of the Christian calendar. Baskets and boxes of sweets were delivered to the families, welcomed with enthusiasm, especially by the youngest. There was a lot of help from the Greek Orthodox churches, which will instead celebrate Orthodox Easter the day after tomorrow.

"Easter will remind them of the Resurrection that awaits all of us," they write from the coordination team. "May our brothers and sisters in Ukraine experience peace, joy, and hope!

In the meantime, thanks to the support of "Don Bosco Mission Bonn", the Salesian Mission Office active in Germany, 1,100 food parcels, destined for as many families, are on their way from Warsaw to Lviv.
