Italy – Maggiore Hospital of Modica dedicated to "Nino Baglieri"

10 May 2022

(ANS - Modica) - On Saturday, May 7, the Maggiore Hospital in Modica was named after and dedicated to the Servant of God "Nino Baglieri", Volunteer with Don Bosco (CDB). The Azienda Sanitaria Provinciale (ASP) 7 of Ragusa, the province’s public hospital district, at the request of the Municipal Administration, after hearing the Diocese of Noto and with the final endorsement of the Prefecture of Ragusa, has completed the process of its naming in record time. The inauguration was attended by the relatives of Nino Baglieri, religious and civil authorities, and, for the Salesian Family, the Provincial of Sicily, Fr Giovanni D'Andrea.

It was a day with a powerful symbolic value as it recalled "the precious inheritance of a man who, in the condition of severe disability, was able to be a great resource and a great help to all others", as stated in the motivations of the proposal for the naming of the city hospital of Modica.

On 6 May 1968 at 11:30 am Nino Baglieri at the age of 17 years falls from a scaffold at the height of the third floor of a building under construction and remains paralyzed from the neck down. The post-accident path was extremely troubled: after ten years of despair came the decisive turning point of his life, the conversion: he began to read the Bible and above all accepted his condition by becoming a witness of suffering.

"A joy for the city of Modica, for those who knew and loved him," said Fr Salvatore Cerruto, vicar of Pozzallo, Ragusa, on the occasion of the dedication. "The field of health care is so difficult today. We all have to work for the relief and the care of the sick and Nino, from heaven, will coordinate us in this help and in this commitment for the sick."

The director of the ASP 7 of Ragusa, arch. Angelo Aliquò said: "We are used to naming hospitals after great personalities, even kings or queens; today, however, we are naming the Hospital of Modica after a simple, humble person who represented such values that a community asks to name the hospital after him. We hope that Nino will be a beacon, a spotlight on a changing reality that is attentive to the values of solidarity and accompaniment: the health service that must be cared for and improved."
