Colombia – Community Reconstruction of Salesian Historical Memory

01 July 2022

(ANS - Bogotá) - In June, the first meeting of 2022 was held regarding the process of community reconstruction of the Salesian Historical Memory of the "St. Peter Claver" Province of Colombia-Bogotá (COB).

On that occasion, several guests took part in the work as speakers: Fr. Stanislaw Zimniak, from the Association of Salesian History Scholars (ACSSA), gave a lecture on the reconstruction of historical memory; Dr. Pamela Alarcon presented the benefits of the work developed by procedures in the Salesian Historical Archive of the "Beato Artemide Zatti" Province of Southern Argentina (ARS), in Bahía Blanca; Dr. Sofia Carli presented the ARS Salesian Sites Guide; Dr. Guadalupe Morad shared the process of developing and implementing the "Revista Chronica"; and Prof. Julio Tutak shared the experience of La Candelaria Mission and the Monsignor Fagnano Museum, of Rio Grande, Argentina.

Also, the internal processes of the COB Province were reviewed, analyzed, and deepened in relation to the work of Oral History, Salesian Charism, and Historical Memory, under the leadership of Fr. Claudio Cartes, from Chile; and useful and suitable elements were identified to strengthen the components to be developed in each of the Salesian presences.

In the near future, the project plans to continue through other meetings and to enrich the reflection by continuing to disseminate the different experiences developed in other Latin American countries, to expand the knowledge of the participants, and strengthen the ACSSA network.

During the proceedings Fr. Rafael Lasso, COB's Provincial Economer, left a concrete message concerning the process of Historical Memory and the Salesian Charism, stating, "Historical Memory must help us to recognize and save those who lived, those who continue to live there; it must help us to ask the questions: how are we living our Salesian works? How are we embodying the Salesian charism in today's world? And it must help us understand the importance of caring for and remembering the Salesian Charism as the main heritage of the Community."
