Italy – Boretto prepares for canonization of Artemide Zatti, SDB

11 July 2022

(ANS - Boretto) - "I am truly proud to have been born in Boretto. I’m very happy to meet a fellow citizen who is a saint!" Thus, and in other ways, said the large group of people who, in the city of Boretto, participated in the event organized on July 7 given the upcoming canonization of the beloved son of that land, Blessed Artemide Zatti, Salesian coadjutor (Boretto, Italy, 1880 - Viedma, Argentina, 1951).

The Basilica dedicated to St. Mark screened the film "Zatti, Our Brother," produced by the Salesian Bulletin and the Provinces of Argentina, scripted and directed by Fr Ricardo Campoli, of the Social Communication Department, who presented this film production, which narrates the human and spiritual story of Zatti at a dramatic moment in his life, when he was informed that the San Jose Hospital in Viedma, to which he had dedicated all his energies, would be demolished. It was at this moment that his faith and fortitude would be tested.

The city of Boretto had the privilege of seeing the film dubbed in Italian for the first time. The emotion of those present was immediate and intense, as was the thanks of the parish priest, Fr Giancarlo Minotta, who led the dialogue with Fr Campoli, highlighting aspects and provocations that make Artemide Zatti's testimony relevant today.

The day was also marked by a meeting with the group of animators of the Brescello oratory, of which Fr Minotta is also parish priest, where Fr Pierluigi Cameroni, Postulator General for the Causes of Saints of the Salesian Family, and Fr Campoli gave a family presentation on the story of Artemide Zatti and his life dedicated to the service of the poor and the sick.

In a subsequent meeting, which was also attended by the mayor of Boretto, Matteo Benassi, they took stock of the initiatives in the pipeline to enliven the event of Artemide Zatti's canonization.

Of particular interest is the creation of a photographic exhibition, conceived by Fr Erino Leoni, Vicar of the Province of Italia Lombardo-Emiliana (ILE), which traces the story of Artemide Zatti around three key verbs that marked his entire life: "Credetti, promisi, guarii – I believed, I promised, I healed"; also, the setting up of an itinerary on the territory through the meaningful sites where the future Salesian saint lived his childhood and adolescence, such as the house where he was born, the church, the station, the Po River, which offers some messages regarding family, work, emigration, solidarity, and faith.
