Mexico – Dialogue and synergy with institutions to make Salesian action in favor of migrants increasingly effective

27 July 2022

(ANS - Tijuana) – On July 21 and 22, the “Proyecto Salesiano Tijuana A.C.” was invited to participate, as a civil organization competent on the subject, in three events of great importance for work with migrants, refugees, and in general with people in situations of human mobility.

On the first of the two days, the Secretary of State of Baja California, Catalino Zabala, together with the Undersecretary for Migratory Affairs, Adriana Minerva, highlighted the work done by civil society organizations on behalf of migrants and, at the same time, handed over in-kind goods for the two shelters that the "Proyecto Salesiano Tijuana A.C." runs in the city, for women, women with minors, and men.

Afterward, the Tijuana City Council, led by Mayor Montserrat Caballero, together with the Director of Migrant Attention Services, presented the "Guide for Migrants and Refugees in Tijuana," which contains information about the "Padre Chava" Refectory and Shelter House, as well as the offices of the Mexican Commission of Aid to Refugees (COMAR) present in the Sons of Don Bosco facilities. This guide is a very useful and necessary tool for all people who arrive in the border city of Tijuana and need official documents, a center where they can find shelter and welcome, medical care, or food.

Finally, on Friday, July 22, the Salesians in Tijuana had an exchange with international and national organizations together with the head of COMAR in Mexico at the federal level, Andrés Ramírez, on the topic of social and labor insertion of refugees in the region, to dialogue and reflect together on an issue that concerns the daily work of the "Proyecto Salesiano Tijuana A.C."

"It is of the utmost importance to strengthen ties with the various actors in the field to continue working on behalf of people in human mobility contexts, especially with those who seek refuge in our country, most of whom have left their place of origin due to violence, natural disasters or discrimination, which makes them among the most vulnerable in these conditions," said the Tijuana Salesians.

"At Proyecto Salesiano Tijuana A.C.," they continued, "we consider the defense of human rights and the dignity of people as fundamental pillars. We have already taken many steps forward in these years and we will continue to walk further, strengthen ties, raise our voices and continue to build spaces for the integral promotion of all human beings, especially the most vulnerable."
