Poland – Salesians honor Blessed August Czartoryski, SDB

09 August 2022

(ANS - Przemyśl) - On Sunday, July 31, the Salesian presence of Przemyśl, belonging to the Poland-Krakow Province (PLS), with the entire parish community, commemorated Blessed August Czartoryski, a Polish Salesian, in view of his liturgical memorial (August 2). On the occasion, the blessed was also honored with the dedication of a square and the unveiling of a painting in his honor.

The day of celebrations began with the opening of Blessed August Czartoryski Square and the blessing of the image of the Salesian Blessed, placed on the building of the old rectory. The rite was performed by Msgr. Stanisław Jamrozek, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Przemyśl, who then also presided over the Mass in honor of Blessed August Czartoryski.

In his homily, referring to the Sunday Gospel, Msgr. Jamrozek encouraged the faithful to take a healthy distance from material goods because "this is the consequence of listening to the Word of God, but also of responding to the requests God makes of us. When I put Jesus first, when I listen to him, then I possess this distance from the world."

The preacher then invited us to ask God to help us succeed in making good use of what He Himself gives us. And, after also quoting St. Paul, he pointed precisely to the example of the Salesian Blessed August Czartoryski, born into a family of Polish high nobility, as a role model for making good use of wealth. "The saints, including Blessed August Czartoryski, are a beautiful example of seeking distance and balance between the material and the spiritual. By his life, Czartoryski showed us that for him Jesus was a much greater treasure than anything else, and that is why he chose Him and for Him he gave up his worldly career."

Msgr. Jamrozek also noted that Blessed Czartoryski is also a model of vocational discernment, from whom it is possible to learn how to choose a path consonant with one's God-given vocation. "Seeing his vocation, we can try to ask ourselves what God has prepared for us and thus, despite the opposition of the world and all its proposals, we too may learn to side with the Lord."

Shortly before the end of the Eucharist, Fr. Bogdan Nowak, pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Przemyśl, took the floor and thanked the community of faithful for the good preparation and intense participation in the ceremony of homage to the Polish Salesian Blessed.

The festive day celebrations concluded with the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, before which the faithful recited the litany to Blessed August Czartoryski and sang the Te Deum.
