India – 100 Years of FMA presence in India

(ANS – Chennai) – FMA India rejoices as it commemorates 100 years of her presence in India. The Salesian Sisters of Don Bosco, in India began their presence in 1922, when six Italian sisters came to India in the year to mark the celebration of the Golden Jubilee of the Institute. They began rendering their service in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu and from there the mission was extended to other parts of India.

The Chennai Province was the first province to be established followed by six other Provinces all over India with their Provincial houses established in Shillong, Guwahati, Mumbai, Calcutta, Bangalore and Trichy. At present there are more than 1000 Sisters working in these different provinces of India rendering educational, social and health services to thousands of young people, women and children. The Provincials of the other Provinces, Sisters, Teachers, Parents, Salesian Family Members and students are expected to join the celebrations from other parts of India too. The celebrations commence on 1st September 2022 in the Provincial House at Kodambakkam, Chennai and the culmination of this historic event will be on 3 September 2022 at Auxilium College campus, Vellore.

The celebrations will unfold in the presence of the Mother General, Sr. Chiara Cazzuola and the General Councilors - Sr. Mora Ruth del Pilar, Sr. Borja Runita and Sr. Celine Jacob. The Rector Major, Fr Angel Fernandes Artime, the successor of Don Bosco from Rome will be celebrating the thanksgiving Eucharist of the Solemn centenary celebrations along with Fr Biju Michael, the South Asian Regional Superior of the Salesians and all the Salesian Provincials of India on 3 September 2022 in Auxilium College Campus. Around 5000 people from all over India are expected to participate in various events of the celebrations.

The Provincial of Chennai Province Sr. Maria Nirmala Lazar informed that as part of the Celebrations about 100 deserving students would be awarded scholarships and a scholarship fund of Rs.10 lakhs is to be created for the higher education of poor students on 3 September 2022.
