South Sudan – Help for inhabitants of the refugee camp continues

12 September 2022

(ANS – Gumbo) – Also this year, the Salesian Missionary Foundation "Don Bosco" based in Warsaw continues to help the inhabitants of the Gumbo refugee camp. Thanks to the funds obtained as part of the Polish foreign aid program "Polish Aid" and in cooperation with local Salesians, the Foundation help to feed and provides medical assistance in the camp.

Families living in the Gumbo refugee camp receive food parcels every month. This help saves the lives of the camp residents. On a daily basis, they struggle with lack of work, difficult living conditions. They live in tents constructed of pegs, large and smaller branches, covered with tarpaulin. They plant vegetables on a designated piece of land or near a tent.

Medical and personal protective equipment was also purchased for the clinic run at the mission facility. Basic medical care is provided here to the residents of the camp. On Saturdays, medical assistance is provided directly in the refugee camp.

In August, the Salesians completed work on the construction of the playground. A sports and recreation area was also created. In 2021, the Foundation provided funds to build additional classrooms for the overcrowded school. This year, it purchased the most necessary teaching materials for primary school students.

In South Sudan, a country where until recently there were fights, children do not have toys on a daily basis, they do not sleep in beds, but on straw mats spread out on the ground. Access to education is difficult. Classrooms are overcrowded. The school is the main escape from everyday problems. "When children are not going to school, they wander between tents and look for any entertainment. They often help parents take care of their younger siblings or bring water. Their everyday life is very difficult. We hope that the new playground and sports area, although to a small extent, will change the everyday life of children from the Gumbo camp," says Fr Piotr Gozdalski.
