Dominican Republic – 75 years of Salesian presence in Jarabacoa

14 December 2022

(ANS - Jarabacoa) - On Saturday, December 10, in the parish of Mary Help of Christians in Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic, a Eucharist of thanksgiving for the Salesian presence in the city was celebrated, presided over by Fr. Víctor Pichardo, Rector of the Salesian community.

During the homily, the Rector thanked all the families of Jarabacoa who, from the very beginning, welcomed the first Salesians by opening the doors of their homes and their hearts to them; later he also presented to the faithful gathered there the Salesians who were the fruit of the first vocational harvest of the Salesian Aspirantate, erected precisely in that house.

At the end of the celebration, the parish priest, Fr. Juan Francisco Tejada, thanked all those who collaborated in the parish church’s renovation, while Fr. Ángel Rogelio Soto, former ANT Provincial and Councilor of the work, expressed his gratitude more generally toward all the families of the city for their generous support to the Salesian work in Jarabacoa since its beginnings in 1947, and for all the affection, esteem and collaboration lent over these 75 years.

Also, because of the 75th anniversary of Salesian presence, senators, deputies, and the Jarabacoa City Council paid tribute to the Sons of Don Bosco for sharing their charism and for their great contribution to the education of children, youth, and adolescents of the entire city community.

The day of celebration and festivity was then rounded off with the staging of the musical "Una casa, un sueño – a house, a dream," produced by Vanessa Caraballo, which portrayed in artistic form the historical journey taken by the Salesians from that distant 1947 - when they arrived in the city led by Msgr. Riccardo Pittini and Fr. Bartolomé Vegh - to the present day.
