Spain – La Orotava opens celebrations of 75th anniversary of Salesian presence

22 December 2022

(ANS - La Orotava) - Last December 10, the opening ceremony of the events celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Salesian presence was held in La Orotava, on the island of Tenerife. It was a simple and familiar event, but full of emotions.

José Manuel Pitti, a journalist and congressman who is a Past Pupil of the school, was in charge of presenting the event. Fr. Francisco de Paula Jaldo, a Salesian and current Rector of the work, invited all those present to live this festive year with grateful remembrance: it is time to value with affection and admiration all that so many Salesians, educators, and families have built to make this work what it is today, he said.

Fernando Báñez, Delegate for Lay Management Works for the Province of Spain-Mary Help of Christians, invited all to celebrate this year by bringing to life three verbs: to thank, to remember, and to enthuse. The city's mayor, Francisco Linares, also a Past Pupil, stressed the importance of feeling truly at home each time one visits the Salesian work and highlighted the great efforts that, over the years, the Salesians have made for the city's youth. These speeches were then accompanied by some musical pieces performed by members of the Youth Center.

Afterward, Fr. Felipe Acosta, a Salesian and alumnus of the institute's first graduating class, was in charge of officially proclaiming the anniversary celebrations open. With his words, he was able to convey to everyone the history of the Salesian presence in La Orotava and the fruits that have resulted in culture, politics, sports, devotion to Mary Help of Christians and the social struggle on behalf of the most needy. His speech also served to celebrate the tireless dedication of so many Salesians and members of the Salesian Family who have helped spread the Salesian style in Tenerife.

The event concluded with a well-deserved tribute to the school's first alumni who were able to attend the event, students who are the living memory of 75 years of Salesian presence.

The anniversary celebrations, which will continue throughout 2023, then included a further appendix with the ceremony held in the following days at the "San Isidro" school in La Orotava. It was, again, a simple celebration, addressed to all students, their families, and the entire educational community, which wanted to symbolically celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Salesian presence in the city with the representation of the 75th-anniversary logo with all those present in the courtyard of the institute, and with the release in the air of 75 biodegradable balloons, as a symbol of education in line with current needs and the commitment to the protection of Creation.
