Spain – Rector Major: "We do not have the right to lose hope"

23 January 2023

(ANS - Barakaldo) - In front of about 200 educators from Salesian schools and social platforms, the Rector Major, Fr. Ángel Fernández Artime, emphasized that "we do not have the right to lose hope," even if there are difficulties in education due to the social or family context in which young people live. The 10th Successor of Don Bosco began his visit to Barakaldo in this way on Friday, January 20, to close the anniversaries of three Salesian houses: the 125th anniversary of the "San Paulino de Nola" center, better known as "Salesianos Barakaldo"; the 80th anniversary of the "San Juan Bosco" work, better known in town as "Salesianos Cruces"; and the 75th anniversary of the "Our Lady of Begoña" house of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (FMA), simply called "Salesianas Barakaldo" by everyone.

The meeting of educators was the first of the acts scheduled for the entire weekend, and during his speech Fr. Á.F. Artime encouraged lay educators to live the Salesian charism in a shared way together with Salesian religious because in order to carry on the Salesian works it is necessary to "make sure that the charism is alive," regardless of whether it is a religious or a lay person who animates the works. Therefore, he expressed full confidence in the laity and stressed that it is necessary to "take care of the processes of transmission of the charism."

Before taking his leave, the 10th Successor of Don Bosco also stressed that it is necessary to welcome and host young people in the situations in which they find themselves, without regretting other situations or contexts of the past, but thinking about helping them integrate into society.
