Portugal – WYD DON BOSCO 23 launches two important campaigns ahead of upcoming WYD Lisbon 2023

27 March 2023

(ANS - Lisbon) - As the start date of the next World Youth Day (WYD), which will be held in Lisbon in August 2023, draws ever closer, WYD DON BOSCO 23 - the Salesian Youth Movement (SYM) organization responsible for convening and the participation of young people from various backgrounds around the world in WYD - has launched two important campaigns. The first focuses on how to attract young volunteers, while the second aims to raise awareness of all those who have the opportunity to become host families.

Volunteers are a significant support in carrying out the many tasks that an event of this magnitude requires. In addition to the organizational aspect, they will also be a friendly, safe and helpful face, able to help those in need and provide for any needs. To become a volunteer, one must be at least 18 years old and be willing to work in the "Salesian way," that is, putting young people at the center of everything.

To better organize all the work, volunteers of WYD DON BOSCO 23 will be divided into groups, accompanied and trained by the organization itself according to the different activities in which they will be involved. In fact, depending on the needs, there will be various categories of volunteers. Specifically, they will be distributed among: occasional volunteers, staff volunteers, and SYM Festival volunteers. All information can be found at this link.

As for host families, they will have to be willing to host pilgrims during the week of July 31 to August 7. The campaign is aimed at families linked to some Salesian presence (school, parish, or other), who will host Salesian pilgrims, mostly young people.

Specifically, families who accept this role must guarantee to host a minimum of two pilgrims, providing them with a bed or mattress or sofa bed or otherwise a space where the pilgrims can rest. They must also ensure daily hygiene, offering a bathroom with shower, and breakfast. If possible, they should also facilitate the pilgrim's transportation from his or her home to the Salesian home.

The groups of Salesian pilgrims will arrive at their assigned Salesian houses and then be distributed to families. However, the family knows in advance the number of young people they will have to welcome and the time of their arrival.

"Welcoming pilgrims is a way to participate in World Youth Day, to welcome Christ into the home, and to offer young people the best possible experience," they write from WYD DON BOSCO 23.

All information and registration forms are available here.

WYD DON BOSCO 23 is the name of the Salesian Youth Movement organization responsible for convening and fostering the participation of young people from different Salesian environments around the world in WYD Lisbon 2023, to make it live according to the charism of Don Bosco. WYD DON BOSCO 23 wants to motivate young people to walk this path as a pilgrimage that will strengthen their faith and challenge other young people who are further from the faith to know and recognize the living Christ.

The name of the organization, WYD DON BOSCO 23, is the result of combining the acronym in English referring to World Youth Day (WYD), and a play on the English word "with,"; the reference to Don Bosco, founder of the Salesian Family; and the date of the event.
