Central America – Webinar for Administrators and Economers on the importance of sustainability in Salesian works

19 April 2023

(ANS) - Last April 12, at 2:00 p.m. local time (UTC-6), a webinar sponsored by the central team of the Central American Region's Educational Commission (CERCA, in Spanish) was held, specifically addressed to the administrators and Economers of Salesian Works of three congregations of the Salesian Family: Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (FMA), Daughters of the Divine Savior (HDS) and Salesians (SDB).

A total of 45 representatives from various educational works in the region participated. The topic addressed was the "sustainability" of the works, a critical and important issue given the post-pandemic situation of need.

The webinar was given by Sister Patricia Torres, a Salvadoran religious of the FMA, with a Master's degree in Economics and responsible for the administrative processes of the "Most Holy Savior" Province of Central North America, as well as a Provincial Councilor.

Emphasized during the event was the importance of seeking strategies that allow Salesian works to maintain themselves over time, adapting to an ever-changing environment, without neglecting an adequate balance in the face of needs and the care of available resources, so as not to compromise the capabilities of future generations. In other words, knowing how to give answers to today in order to plan for tomorrow.

The webinar also mentioned the importance of relating this balance to the Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations, but with a Salesian approach. In this sense, the importance of Salesian meaningfulness in the environments of each work and presence was emphasized. In addition, the need to strengthen fidelity to the Salesian charism was stressed, constantly updating it to ensure its permanence over time and to provide adequate responses to the needs of society.

During the webinar, the concerns of the participants emerged and were addressed, and they expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to have taken part in a forum intended for different stakeholders in educational-pastoral communities.

At the end of the event, it was finally concluded that the lines of work established in Axis 4 of the CERCA Strategic Plan are being addressed in this way, which contributes to the achievement of its objectives.
