Portugal – Funchal's Salesians and Child Development Aid Center partner for aquatic therapies

19 April 2023

(ANS - Funchal) - Care for the neediest minors, the heart of the Salesian charism, can be manifested in many ways. A non-traditional but very eloquent way is the one identified by the Salesians of Funchal, who last April 10 signed a collaboration protocol with the Child Development Aid Center "CRESCER", active in the same Portuguese city. Under this agreement, the Salesian work's pool complex will be made available to carry out aquatic therapy sessions for children and youth with neurological and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Aquatic therapy is intended for children aged 3 years and older with neurodevelopmental disorders, and sensory, motor, social, cognitive, or emotional disorders. Individual hydrotherapy sessions last 30 minutes and are conducted by an occupational therapist in the learning pool, using various play materials for adaptation and autonomy in the aquatic environment, as well as other aspects of neurosensory and motor development.

The Child Development Aid Center has been active for about a year and a half in Funchal and provides pedagogical support, physiotherapy, speech therapy, and psychological, nutritional, and occupational help in the pediatric age range of 0 to 18 years.

The Salesians, for their part, have been active in Funchal for more than 70 years, having started their presence in the city in October 1950. From the very beginning, their work was marked by the social thrust of its pastoral action, having as its first objective the education of poor and orphaned youth. Today a vast Salesian work stands in Funchal, which is composed of many educational and apostolic activities, being able to count on an oratory, the school from the first to the third core cycle, the parish, Welfare Works, the center of the Salesian Cooperators, the Center of the Past Pupils of Don Bosco and that of the Association of Mary Help of Christians.
