27 April 2023

(ANS – Mahajanga) – The Regional Councillor for Africa and Madagascar Fr. Alphonse Owoudou continues his visit to the vice-Province of Madagascar and Mauritius.

After a three-day visit to the Salesian work of Ijely, he left for the western side of the island, in the coastal town of Mahajanga, to visit the Salesian work of Antanimasaja. He was welcomed at the airport by the confrères and aspirants, and the next morning by the teachers and students of our Technical Centre, who gave him some speeches, slams and Malagasy folk dances before giving him the floor.

This technical training centre offers 391 young people from this town - mostly boys - training in the following technical fields: Woodwork, Building and Public Works, Metalwork (welding) and, in the field of Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Manufacturing (fitting - turning - milling), Electromechanics, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning. Another adjacent Technical high school, on the FMA side, also offers courses mainly for girls.

The Don Bosco Technical Centre is organised into two main sectors: the Technical High School, which welcomes young people who have finished secondary school, and the TVET Center, which offers a chance to those who, for one reason or another, have not completed secondary school. In this Centre, the Salesian confreres, in collaboration with the FMA and members of the EPC, also prepare the learners for the sacraments through catechesis. The learners are accompanied by 28 lay teachers and 8 Salesians. Their guidance is provided within the framework of our parish of Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus, which covers 6 districts, serving a population of about 20,000 inhabitants.

For these young people and others, the Oratorio of Antanimasaja opens its doors every Wednesday and Sunday with multiple socio-cultural activities as well as membership of associations such as Sakaizan'i Dominique Savio, Laura Vicuña, Marie Dominique Mazzarello, Antilin'i Madagasikara (AIM), and other classic groups such as the Jeunesse Ouvrière Chrétienne, the Scouts, the Jeunesse Franciscaine, and many others.
