Spain – Meetings of "Itinerary of Faith Education" of SSM Province: privileged experiences for young people

11 May 2023

(ANS - La Coruña) - On Saturday, May 6, in honor of St. Domenico Savio, the groups of children and youth of the "Itinerary of Faith Education" of the Spain-Saint James the Greater (SSM) Province - Saltimbanquis, Andaina, and ADS -, which are part of the Federation of Salesian Youth Centers of Galicia, celebrated their "Xuntanza," that is, their festive gathering. The event took place at the "Abeiro" youth center in La Coruña, marking the 30th anniversary of its founding. Similar events were also held on the same day and the following day in León and Deusto.

136 people gathered at the youth center in La Coruña. After a time of reception, free play and welcome, each movement organized its own proposal.

Members of the "Saltimbanquis" group participated in their own Olympics on the Salesian school's sports fields, complete with the lighting of an Olympic-style torch and animators dressed half in half-Greek costumes and half in Roman costumes.

Boys and girls from the "Andaina" group held a cinematic scavenger hunt, shooting videos of themselves on the waterfront and ending the event in the school theater with a film festival, where everyone watched their videos starring themselves.

Meanwhile, "ADS" members took a tour through the old city of La Coruña to discover some of its secrets and finally returned to the Abeiro youth center for lunch. Then followed a time of dialogue and one of reflection, adapting to a one-day event the model provided by the provincial coordination for pre-adolescents.

The day ended with a meeting of the boys and girls of the three movements in the parish church of Maria Auxiliadora, where an emotional and participatory religious celebration took place.

The final touch of the "Xuntanza" took place in the school pavilion, where the youngsters formed a large human "30" and received a small souvenir commemorating the event.

At the rendezvous at the "Don Bosco" Youth Center in León, more than 150 IEF members from the "Saltimbanquis," "Andaina" and "ADS" groups gathered for a day of conviviality and celebration.

On Sunday 7, the meeting was in Deusto with the youngest members of the Youth Centers of the "Bosko Taldea Federation" and the "Don Bosco Federation" of Cantabria.

Also of note, the IEF meetings for boys and girls of this age group had already begun last April with the "Chiquis" meeting in Aranjuez.

Fr. Xabier Camino, Delegate for Youth Ministry at SSM, said at the end of the Deusto meeting, "It is a joy to see how these meetings bring together so many young people from our youth centers and allow us to continue to deepen the objectives of the faith education itinerary and the pastoral campaign itself for this academic year."

"These meetings are privileged experiences that consolidate the pastoral work of each Salesian house and help strengthen the processes of evangelization starting with a quality and very participatory provincial proposal."

In total, about 1,400 boys and girls from all over the SSM Province had this privileged and festive experience, under the banner of the Pastoral Campaign motto chosen for this year: "Let's Open Pathways."
