Cameroon – Second Regional Salesian Brothers' Congress in Africa-Madagascar Region

23 May 2023

(ANS - Yaoundé) - Six years after the first edition, conducted in Kenya in April 2017, the Regional Congress of Salesian Brothers of the Africa-Madagascar Region is renewed for a second edition. Hosted this time by the Salesians of Yaoundé, Cameroon, in the VP "Our Lady of Africa" of Equatorial Tropical Africa (ATE), and accompanied by the Regional Councilor, Fr. Alphonse Owoudou, the participants will experience five days, from May 24-29, 2023, of sharing, Salesianism and deepening of the charism, under the general topic of the Congress: "Walking with Raphael and Tobias, Cycling with Artemide."

The meeting begins on Wednesday afternoon, May 24, with a welcome by Bro. Albert Ramadan, ATE Secretary, the official opening of the Congress by ATE Provincial Fr. Roland Mintsa, and the reading of the final statement produced in the first Congress.

On the second day, the actual work sessions begin, which, as for subsequent days, will all be followed by times of discussion in small groups and assembly debates. The first paper will be by Sister Geltrude Kana Bella, on the theme "The Vocation of the Consecrated Brother in the Church," while in the afternoon Bro. Albert Ramadan and Fr. Ela André are scheduled to speak on the theme "The Historical Journey of the Salesian Brother: the two figures of Salesian vocation."

On Friday, May 26, in the morning, Fr. Owoudou will illustrate the theme that gives the congress its motto - "Walking with Raphael and Tobias, Cycling with Artemide" - while in the afternoon sessions Fr. Sellam Augustine, Vicar of the East Africa Province (AFE), will present several prominent figures among the Salesian Brothers, such as Artemide Zatti, Stephen Sandor and Simon Srugi, and Bro. Kamga Ignace shall delve into the collaboration between Salesians and laity.

On Saturday morning, May 27, Salesian Bros. Paolo Vaschetto and Clarence Watts shall lead the assembly in reflecting on the identity of the Salesian brother, educator and evangelizer, in light of the second Programmatic Line for 2020-2026; while after lunch, the topic of the specific formation of Salesian brothers will be touched upon.

On Sunday 28, attendees will delve into the topic of social communication, including a short presentation of "Don Bosco Tech" by coauthors Sam Job Olusegun and Njuguna N. Ngigi. The afternoon, instead of classroom work, will be devoted to a cultural visit.

The last day of the proceedings, Monday, May 29, will include the election of Delegates for the future coordination of congresses, the evaluation of the work, and the drafting and presentation of a final statement.

According to the organizers, such a congress is expected to have a beneficial effect on the region in the areas of vocation promotion and Salesian vocation identity and visibility and aims to offer insights for lifelong learning and sharing of vocational journeys among Salesian Brothers.
