Malawi - Development of TVET Communication Strategy

01 June 2023

(ANS – Lilongwe) - A Communication strategy is key in an organization as it helps in the overall productivity of the workforce, creates a positive presence for the organization in the market and instills a sense of trust among employees. This ensures the success of the organization.

Don Bosco Tech Africa through its capacity-building pillar has embarked on a journey to help various countries to develop communication strategies for TVET. Six countries participating in the Global Programme will benefit from this.

The objectives of this program are:

  • To support Don Bosco Job Service Officers in Eight Countries to develop national communication strategies for TVET Centres to achieve result-oriented business partnerships with public and private entities.
  • To create a pool of Don Bosco staff and Job Service Officers with adequate skills, knowledge, and business acumen sufficient to engage large companies, chambers of commerce and associations.
  • To equip Don Bosco TVET centres with a tool for advocacy, partnerships, and networking targeting large and medium-sized business enterprises, chambers, and associations of commerce.

The expected outcomes of the TVET communication strategy are:

  • Increased advocacy, partnerships, and networking initiatives among Don Bosco TVET centres that are geared towards stronger collaboration with large companies, medium-sized enterprises and chambers, and associations.
  • Provision of networking and mentorship opportunities for TVET students and graduates which should help students to gain access to internships, career exploration, professional development, and mentorship.
  • The communication strategy is also anticipated to advocate for increased investment in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) at the local, regional, and national levels. This can help to improve the quality and availability of TVET programs and make them more attractive to students and employers.
  • Countries’ targeting Job Service Offices will be equipped with knowledge and skills in the development of communication strategies and hence a resource to TVET centres during the implementation phase.

From May 8-12, 2023, Don Bosco Tech Africa conducted the first workshop on developing a TVET communication strategy at Don Bosco Youth Technical Institute Lilongwe, Malawi. Participants of the workshop were drawn from both the public and private sector, representatives from Don Bosco Past pupils who are either operating their own business entities or employed in industries, members of the educative pastoral community, Don Bosco staff and management. In total, the activity was attended by 23 participants composed of 15 males and 8 Females for a period of 5 days. The workshop was facilitated by Br. John Njuguna, the deputy director of Don Bosco Tech Africa and Mr. Patrick Wachira, a project officer at Don Bosco Tech Africa.

At the end of the workshop, the participants developed a communication strategy for Don Bosco Youth Technical Institute Lilongwe, Malawi.
