Italy – The General Council’s days of Retreat

06 June 2023

(ANS – Domodossola) – The Rector Major of the Salesians of Don Bosco, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, and the members of his General Council are involved in a week of Retreat from 1 to 8 June, as part of the General Council’s summer plenary session activities. Fr Giuseppe Roggia, SDB, is the preacher.

The place chosen for the General Council’s Retreat this year is the Rosminian house at Domodossola - Monte Calvario. Historically, from February 1828, when Blessed Antonio Rosmini arrived there, the house became the cradle of the Institute of Charity (Rosminian Fathers) he founded. As the early decades of the 19th century passed, the complex of buildings built on the mountain summit partly regained its vitality as a Retreat House and a place of prayer, becoming above all a house of formation for the Institute.

In his knowledge and wisdom, the Retreat preacher, Fr Giuseppe Roggia, SDB, has organised the Retreat around a continuous lectio of St Paul's Letter to the Philippians and a Salesian lectio of the Dream of the 10 hills.

The Retreat is being coordinated by Fr Stefano Martoglio, Vicar of the Rector Major. “It is the first time that the Rector Major with his Council has begun its plenary session with the Retreat: it is a way to start looking at the interiority and spiritual care that prepares for every kind of service of animation and government” Fr Martoglio emphasised.

The Retreat days are privileged moments for prayer, reflection and fraternal sharing. As the Salesian Constitutions 91 tell us, “For the community and for every Salesian these are privileged moments for listening to the Word of God, discerning his will and purifying our hearts” (C. 91).

At the end of the week of Retreat, the Rector Major and his Council will return to Valdocco, Turin, to begin their work sessions.
