Italy – A formation course at the UPS to help teachers in "managing the classroom and difficult pupils"

17 January 2024

(ANS – Rome) – The Institute of Psychology at the Pontifical Salesian University (UPS) is organising a formation and refresher course for the weekend of Friday 26 and Saturday 27 January 2024,  dedicated to innovative strategies to address the challenges of classroom management and to support students in the school environment.

How do we make the learning environment an even safer and more inclusive place? Teaching represents a stimulating and rewarding challenge, but, in the face of difficult class groups and students, it can turn into an experience full of complications if methods and tools aimed at particularly effective management are not adopted.

The formation and refresher course aims to provide theoretical and practical skills on the dynamics and management of the class group with a focus on the problems of relating to difficult classes and students. In this regard, a specific proposal will be presented that will allow participants to acquire the necessary skills for effective involvement of the various roles involved in the school environment (teachers, students and parents).

The course will stress the possibilities of action aimed at prevention, and promotion of socio-relational well-being in the school,  as well as the management and remediation of problematic class and pupil situations, using an integrated theoretical approach and operational material for use in the different school  grades.

The objectives of the course include, first of all, understanding the factors that facilitate and hinder the management of the class group; increasing the management skills of a class group, the rules and possible conflicts; and improving school-family collaboration.

Aimed at teachers at all levels, school leaders, school psychologists, and educators in general, the course is directed by Prof. Alessandro Ricci, and will consist of three different modules: the first, on Friday afternoon, will be led by Prof. Marco Maggi, and will address the theme of the class as a group and group dynamics; the second, on Saturday morning, coordinated by Prof. Ricci,  will focus on difficult students and conflict management; finally, the last module, scheduled for Saturday afternoon, will focus on the rules and students and families of today, and will be led by Prof. Zbigniew Formella.
