Fr Eduardo Moura SDB is one of the coordinators of this initiative. He says that the collection of donations began last week at the Don Bosco Institute in Corumbá. "The campaign was started in that school where we serve many of our neediest students. We asked for the support of volunteers and with them we went to collect gifts and food in different neighbourhoods," he said.
A campaign to collect food, toys and clothing is run every year in Barrio Don Bosco, says Fr Moura, "This Christmas we plan to donate 500 food baskets and gifts."
The campaign for the collection of food began about 50 years ago thanks to the brilliant idea of Fr Ernesto Sassida, who used to pass through the streets with his pickup truck and a bell, inviting people to donate food for the poor. The Diocese of Corumbá, some departments of the Municipality of Corumbá, and the Salesian Institute in Santa Teresa are part of this great initiative for the poor.
In 2015 many people donated clothes, appliances, utensils ... Everything was delivered to needy families. "Last year we helped about 400 families. This year we plan to prepare 500 baskets with food and gifts we receive from the people. These will be delivered to the families served by 'Ciudad Don Bosco',” said Fr Moura who is in charge of this great initiative.
He also explained that the aim of this initiative is to offer families who attend "Ciudad Don Bosco" a Christmas dinner and in this way to ensure that charity is the force that changes the world.
