Italy - "The Dream" of a community that has become home to many

29 December 2016

(ANS - Naples) - The family community called “The Dream” was born in Naples on 8 December 2006. It was a way to respond as Don Bosco would have done to the needs of the poorest children. In ten years hundreds of boys have found a home, a roof, a helping hand, a father's heart, a new outlook on life within this community run by the Salesians.

After ten years the Salesians, educators and young people decided to celebrate this anniversary with a day when the community was open to all, including the past pupils who have gone through as well as sympathizers and friends of the Salesians.

They also made a video which tells, better than words, what it means to find a family and feel accepted for someone who has never had the experience of a family or whose experience was unhappy.

Christian has been in the community for about two years. His friends call him pazzo, madman! When he arrived he was astonished by this new environment, but now it feels like home: he has a roommate that he would not change with anyone. In the community hostel he has learned the meaning of friendship.  Now he dreams of becoming a pastry chef.

Vittorio has been in the centre for only five months. He loves music and singing. He hopes to become a pizza chef. In the Salesian House he not only found a bed but also learned some important lessons. When asked the question, "If you could change one thing in the world, what would you change?" he answers without hesitation: "myself"!

They have two companions, Mustafa and Suad, whose faces immediately betray their foreign origin. Even though both found it hard at first they have settled in. They have learned the Italian language and even the local dialect. At “The Dream” they have their own preferences when it comes to food but they have made friends with the staff ... In short, they have found their new home.

Christian, Vittorio, Mustafa and Suad ... There are hundreds of needy children welcomed and helped in so many Salesian centres and Salesian communities; communities that have become their families.
