India – Don Bosco Alumni Association Kolkata: A Growing Force for Social Action

07 November 2025

(ANS – Kolkata) – The Don Bosco Alumni Association Kolkata, India, has emerged as a dynamic model of alumni-driven social service and community outreach. Under the leadership of President Mr. Vikash Kumar Choraria and Secretary Mr. Manishankar Das, the unit has significantly expanded its impact in recent years, committing itself to serve the marginalised, empower youth, and strengthen the global Bosco fraternity.

Key Social Projects

Bosco on Wheels is one of the flagship initiatives aimed at addressing hunger among the poor and vulnerable. Conducted on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month, a mobile food van travels to hospitals, orphanages, and settlement camps to distribute freshly prepared meals. Members personally serve the needy, with approximately 400 beneficiaries fed every session and over 2,000 rotis bread prepared each time, along with vegetables and dessert.

Bosco Cares caters to the medical needs of the underprivileged. A long-running free dispensary was revitalised into a monthly full-scale clinic organised on the 1st Sunday of every month at the school premises. Managed by alumni doctors, the clinic provides free consultations, medicines and discounted diagnostic tests to more than 100 patients each month.

DB Global is a powerful network that unites past pupils of Don Bosco Kolkata across the world. With 16 active chapters in countries and cities such as the USA, UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai, the initiative enables Bosconians to support one another through professional, social, and humanitarian collaboration.

Bosco Connects stands out as a strong platform for mutual assistance. With hundreds of members from various Don Bosco institutions, the network helps individuals with employment opportunities, business guidance, academic support, medical assistance, crisis needs, blood donation, and legal or administrative help. It has also proven to be an effective space for mobilising funds and addressing urgent personal or community problems.

Longstanding Community Outreach

The unit continues to run the Adult Literacy Project, active for 27 years, which educates and trains underprivileged young women, empowering them with basic education and vocational skills. Annual Blood Donation Camps encourage alumni and parents to contribute towards saving lives. Specialised Eye and Osteoporosis Camps provide free check-ups, eyewear, and cataract surgeries for the economically disadvantaged.

The Don Bosco Alumni Association Kolkata continues to demonstrate how collective goodwill and organised effort can create sustained, meaningful social impact.
