Italy – A Master’s Degree for Educators of Adolescents at the Salesian Pontifical University

26 May 2017

(ANS – Rome) – The need to support and accompany local Churches in the renewal of the processes of education to faith related to adolescents between 14 and 19 years of age, in a context that favours the integral education of the “good Christian and upright citizen”, pushed the Institute of Catechesis of the Faculty of Sciences of Education (FSE) of the Salesian Pontifical University (UPS), to propose a first level Master’s Degree for educators of adolescents in an ecclesial environment.

The proposal, born on request of and in collaboration with the National Catechetical Office (NCO) and the National Service for Youth Ministry (NSYM) of the Italian Bishops’ Conference, meets a demand for a specific qualification and updating of Directors of Catechetical Offices and of the Service for Youth Ministry of the Italian Dioceses and their collaborators.

The Master’s Degree thus has an updating target in sciences of education and of specific formation in catechetical-pastoral methodology and enables to the assumption of responsibilities and coordination at diocesan and parochial levels of ministry and catechesis with adolescents.

The first beneficiaries of the initiative are therefore the Directors and Collaborators of Catechetical Diocesan Offices (CDO) and of the Service of Diocesan Youth Ministry (SDYM) and of Educators who do a service in Oratories and Youth Centres (OYC). In order to enrol as ordinary students for the Master’s Degree, a BA/MA degree is required, either in Philosophy or Theology or Sciences of Education or, in general, in Human Sciences. Other students can be admitted as Guests provided they have a “curriculum vitae” the Director of the Master’s Degree considers appropriate.

As to the formative objectives, the Master’s Degree aims both at transmitting the knowledge of contents, and also at the capacity of mastering, elaborating, organizing and applying them. Because of this, the theme areas and the formation contents will be offered in theoretical lessons and will then be deepened and experienced in workshops and training sessions.

The Master’s Degree, which emphasizes practical application, is structured in 1500 hours, equal to 60 ECTS, and lasts 15 months (from next September to December 2018), with various periods of intensive attendance.

It will be realized in the structures of the UPS in Rome and aims at being a contribution of the Institute of Catechesis to the Italian Church in preparation for the Synod of Bishops of 2018, on the theme “Youth, Faith and Vocational Discernment”.
