India – Toyota partnerships with Don Bosco to train Youth in Skill Training

12 July 2017

(ANS – Chennai) – Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd. announced the launch of its distinctive training model T-TEP (BP) at Don Bosco Technical Campus in Chennai, an initiative aimed at creating a pool of talented and skilled professionals for the automobile industry.

by Father James Bernard, SDB

With this program, Toyota Kirloskar Motor intends to enhance the technical abilities and employability of Industrial Training Institute (ITI) students in the age group of 16 to 18 years. In fact, the current automobile repair industry is characterized by inadequately skilled manpower and lack of professional training for repair and diagnostics. Hence, associating with ITI’s gives access to train and equip their large pool of young people with the best knowledge.

The event, that took place on July 4th, 2017, marked the launch of the second Body & Paint TTEP Program in Tamil Nadu. The BP T-TEP training syllabus imparts training on basic body and paint repair skills in addition to dealer-specific requirements to students, thereby improving their knowledge of repair techniques and facilitating the adoption of latest technology in Body & Paint. Currently, Body & Paint technicians have limited information and hands-on experience on correct repair operations and techniques, forcing dealers to recruit manpower from local garages. Toyota, along with its supplier partners Axalta Coating Systems India Pvt Ltd and 3M, will provide all necessary support to the institute i.e. training consumables, visiting faculty, training material, tools, equipment, etc.

The event was attended by Father Johnson Anthonisamy SDB, Rector of Don Bosco Technical Campus, Chennai; Father Ashok Amaladoss SDB, Director of Don Bosco Technical Campus, Chennai; Mr M Lankalingam, Dealer Principal, Lanson Toyota, Chennai; Mr. TK Manikansan, Vice President; Mr. Senthil Kumar, Vice President (Customer Service) Harsha Toyota, Chennai; along with Mr. B. Padmanabha, Vice President (Customer Service Group) Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru; Mr. Ravi P Sontakke, Deputy General Manager (Customer Service Group) of Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru.

Commenting on the occasion Father Johnson Anthonisamy SDB, Rector of the Don Bosco Technical Campus, said, “It is an honor to be associated with Toyota through this unique program - TTEP. Our institution's mission is to give quality education and we see this partnership as a great opportunity to train students to become highly skilled potential employees. The new curriculum will also offer another dimension to the already comprehensive automotive technology program we offer at our institute.”

Until now, more than 6,750 students have been trained under this training program of which 63% have been offered employment opportunities at Toyota Dealerships across India. This is the fourth T-TEP in Tamilnadu, following one institute in Mohanmull Chordia Jain Industrial Training Center Chennai, and two in Govt Industrial Training Institute, Paramakudi, 2 years ago. To date, a total of over 240 students have been trained by Toyota through this program from the State, of which 83% have been recruited by Toyota Dealers.
