02 November 2017

(ANS – Mumbai) – The Don Bosco Development Society (DBDS) organized a two-day training workshop on the “Candle Making Business” on 27 and 28 October, 2017, for the women of the Self Help Group (SHG) residing in the slums of Mumbai. 40 women successfully completed the entire training course. This training program was held under the aegis of “Flood Relief Project” supported by Don Bosco Mondo, Germany.

Fr Rolvin D’Mello (Executive Director – DBDS) in his inaugural speech said that, “the objective of this workshop was to reach out to the families affected by the floods in Mumbai by training them in some livelihood skills so they could earn extra income for their families.” This training was held in association with Dattopant Thengadi National Board for Workers Education Development. Ms. Mahaima Selvi was the resource person for this training workshop.

The participants learned how to make Fancy Candles in a very cost-effective manner. During this 2-day workshop, they were also taught in detail about marketing, costing, budgeting, pricing and promoting their product. The participants were truly dedicated to learning the skills and determined to start a small business. Raw material was also distributed to participants to help them in starting their business.

“I was affected by the recent flood and heavy rains thereafter. I learned new income-generating skills here. I am grateful to Don Bosco and, hopefully, with this skill of Fancy Candle Making I will be able to generate some income for my family,” said Mrs Hassina Khan. The workshop ended with the vote of thanks proposed by Ms. Basanti (DBDS – Staff).
