Ethiopia – End of the Rector Major’s visit

15 February 2016

(ANS - Zway) - "I have had a wonderful experience ... I have seen once again that, as the Salesian Family, we were born to be close, closer and closer, to the poor." This was the enthusiastic comment of Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, Rector Major, on his visit to Ethiopia.

On Friday 12 February the Rector Major continued his visit to the Vice-Province of Africa Ethiopia (AET) meeting the Salesians, religious and young people who animate the community of Makallè, in the north of the country. Before he even reached the house Fr Á.F. Artime was welcomed by the band and the young people who attend the Salesian house and was accompanied in procession to the destination. On his arrival he spoke with those present and offered words of hope to all. "He stayed with us for four hours and we experienced the presence of Don Bosco," said the Salesian deacon Joseph Trinh Kim Luan.

On Saturday 13, the Rector Major was accompanied to Zway in southern Ethiopia, where members of the Salesian Family and young people from the other houses of the Salesians and the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians of the southern part of the country had gathered. As on other occasions the welcome ceremony was full of colour and symbolic gestures and the great affection felt for the Successor of Don Bosco was evident. During the day, which was also attended by Sr Ruth del Pilar Mora, Provincial of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians in Ethiopia, Sudan and South Sudan, Fr Á.F. Artime met with the young people from the Salesian Youth Movement and was available to answer all their questions.
