The Salesian Spanish NGO "Solidaridad Don Bosco" presented its report of the project "Improvement of opportunities for women in Rukago" developed at the local Salesian Vocational Training Center for the education and vocational or professional formation of women.
The project started in January 2017 and was aimed at combating youth and female poverty through new vocational training courses addressed to women. This new training opportunity was proposed to the area's girls and young women and has allowed 40 young people to receive quality training in the hotel and restaurant sectors, thus facilitating their entry into the labor market. In addition, an employment office was created, which accompanies and assists the students who have completed the courses.
In Burundi, many women suffer from inequality and do not have access to education and training. It is necessary to change the mentality regarding the role that women can play in society.
The Salesian Vocational Training Center, or "Buterere", as it is known there, has over 20 years of experience and is appreciated by everyone for its service to young people. The center offers professional training courses, literacy and recreational and leisure activities.
Thanks to the "Solidaridad Don Bosco" project, the center has been provided with all the equipment and materials necessary for practical lessons, in the kitchen and in the hall: thanks to the collaboration of various public and private bodies in the area, various rooms have been renovated, and refrigerators, kitchen utensils, foods and other related goods delivered ...
Solidaridad Don Bosco believes the project was a success and should serve as a model for other educational centers in Burundi and other initiatives in favor of women. No project, it must be said, is carried out without the collaboration of entities such as the Municipality of Utrera, the Salesian house in Algeciras and the help of many people who contribute to the benefit of the poorest.
