Fiji - "We are all missionaries in our way of serving young people"

28 September 2018

(ANS - Suva) - In the month in which the Missionary Expedition is celebrated, the Salesian presence in the Fiji Islands has organized two significant initiatives: it involved the religious, youth, and sympathizers of the Salesian center in an ecological mission; and it paid tribute to the spiritual Sons of Don Bosco who implanted the Salesian charism in the archipelago.

On the day of the national holiday for the Constitution, the Salesian Formation community in the Fiji Islands, together with the boys and girls who attend the parish dedicated to St. John Bosco, cleaned up the area around the Salesian house.

"It was a nice moment of sharing with the locals. We helped to keep the area clean and tidy," commented the young man in formation Ioane Sinapati, SDB.  "We spent hours collecting rubbish. It was challenging, but also fun, and we were very pleased to see the dedication shown by the parents of the boys and by many children."

The Salesian activity was also proposed as a sign of collaboration for the initiatives of the local Church. For the month of September, in fact, the archdiocese of Suva launched a campaign inspired by Pope Francis' encyclical "Laudato Sì", entitled: "A season of creation: taking care of our common home".

The Salesian ecological initiative was organized in such a way as to conclude the activities on the land specifically purchased for the future development of the Salesian center. In this way, after the effort, there was still time for fun activities that involved all the participants. "Thus we lived a triple celebration," continues Ioane. "We celebrated the Constitution, organized games with children and young people, and celebrated the first anniversary since we began work on the ground of the new parish headquarters."

Furthermore, to share the missionary spirit that permeates the entire Congregation in September, the small Salesian community of Suva carried out a special celebration in honor of Fr James Khaw Hoe and Stanley Rossato, pioneers of the Salesian mission in the Fiji Islands.

During the Mass celebrated for the occasion, at the chapel of the Salesian community, Fr Khaw Hoe emphasized the meaning of the Cross for the life of all Christians, and cited a motto from the Provincial of the "Australia-Pacific" Province, Fr William Matthews: "We are all missionaries in our way of serving young people."
