India - Inauguration and blessing of new village "Dong Don Bosco"

22 November 2018

(ANS - Nongkohlew) - On Sunday 18 November a new village (dong) was inaugurated and blessed in the Nongkohlew area, within the Mawlai constituency. The new dong was called "Dong Don Bosco" in honor of the Saint of Youth, at the behest of the proponent of this initiative, Salesian Fr C.M. Jose Chunkapura, SDB.

Dong Don Bosco is a project that develops amidst nature: it covers a large hill, divided into 24 plots of about 500 square meters each, which were assigned to 24 needy families who did not own a house. On these plots many houses and toilets are being built. In addition, each plot also has a small area of land to be used as a vegetable garden and the Dong Don Bosco also enjoys a common park of about 800 square meters.

Of the 24 project houses, 11 have already been completed and the remaining 13 are under construction. Those already prepared were blessed by Fr Chunkapura at the end of the Mass celebrated outdoors in the Dong Don Bosco park area.

As part of the inauguration celebrations, which also included the unveiling of a commemorative plaque, Fr Chunkapura handed over the keys of the houses to all 24 beneficiaries, in the presence of various authorities and local officials. The local politician T. Sawkmie then congratulated and thanked Fr Chunkapura for the initiative of Dong Don Bosco and also for the attention and care he has always shown towards the needy in his thirty years service to the inhabitants of the State of Meghalaya and, in particular, to children affected by rickets, for whom years ago he launched the "Caring Ministry" project.

Sawkmie also continued to assure the local administration's support for the future development of the village. While Baiaineh Diegngdoh, the village chief, expressed words of gratitude towards the authorities, the houses and infrastructures already built, and even more towards the Salesian religious: "Dear Father Jose, for us, having a house of our own is a dream that becomes reality. Thanks!," he said.

The official speeches were concluded with the intervention of the engineer who supervised the works for free, Vincent Marweiñ, and the entrepreneur who had had the work done, Klington Nongsteng, who both said they were happy to have been able to participate in this charitable initiative.

In addition to the Dong Don Bosco houses, three other housing centers for the poor have been completed at Phudmuri and another at Laitlum, while another is under construction and Umsaw.

The "Caring Ministry" project is a service initiated by Fr Chunkapura SDB in 1989 for children affected by rickets. Over the past 29 years, this project has provided treatment to over 26,000 children and is currently taking care of more than 7,600, coming from various parts of the Meghalaya. The "Caring Ministry" also runs a free primary school and a free education center for children from very poor families, and deals with educational needs (providing tuition, uniforms, books ...) of about 150 poor children enrolled in 8 different schools.
