Mexico – 15,000 km to visit Salesian communities: Extraordinary Visit by Fr Filiberto González

30 November 2018

(ANS - Guadalajara) - After three months of traveling about 15,000 kilometers to visit the various Salesian communities, Fr Filiberto González Plasencia, General Councilor for Social Communications, concluded the Extraordinary Visitation of the Mexico-Guadalajara Province on 28 November (MEG).

The closure took place in the "Betsaida" house in Amatitán, 50 km from Guadalajara, in the presence of the Provincial, Fr Hugo Orozco, members of his Council, the directors of the 24 Salesian communities of MEG, and some other Salesians who were able to travel to listen to the report prepared by Fr González at the conclusion of the visit carried out on behalf of the Rector Major, which began on 17 August.

What stands out from what was shared by the General Councilor for Social Communications of the Salesian Congregation are the points of reference he used for the visit's fulfillment: "I have done a work," he said, "starting from an outlook of faith, which I hope is for the good of every confrere and of every community ... Taking into account the Constitutions, the indications of the General Chapter 27 and of the Provincial Directory."

Fr González, in creating a framework of the job done by Salesians in central and northern Mexico, in the current contexts regarding social, economic and youth, wished to emphasize that there were still strong contrasts and many differences among the population, especially from an economic point of view and therefore in their opportunities of life.

He also referred to the reality of the Salesians of the MEG Province, currently 177 in number, and highlighted the richness of the Province in the field of vocational training, in many different fields, and on the various fronts of educational and pastoral activity, as well as in the great variety of proposals for associationism through the Salesian Youth Movement.

Among the recommendations given by the General Councilor are: how to grasp or measure the symptoms of spiritual health among confreres, share their experience of God among Salesians and young people, and live their vocation with fidelity and joy, in harmony with the vision of the X Successor of Don Bosco, Fr Ángel Fernandez Artime, who on the occasion of the Bicentenary of the birth of Don Bosco, in 2015, said he was dreaming of a Congregation of happy Salesians.

The conclusions of Fr González's visit will now be studied and discussed by every community awaiting the Rector Major's indications to the Province.

The MEG Province, entitled "Christ the King and Mary Help of Christians", is precisely the Province of origin of Fr González, who was also its Provincial - for a short period of time, having then been elected General Councilor for Social Communications and later a member of the General Council of Salesians in 2008, and re-elected for another six years in 2014.
