Guatemala - A grandiose project with the help of Don Bosco

07 April 2016

(ANS - San Benito Petén) – At the beginning of February a grandiose project was started in the Salesian mission of San Benito Petén. The plan is to build a parish hall, a space that will serve for catechism classes and to bring people together for various activities of the mission and to start a football club on the model of San Lorenzo in Argentina. "With football you can save many young people from the streets,” says Fr Giampiero De Nardi, a Salesian missionary in San Benito Petén.

Our Provincial, Fr Alejandro Hernández has promised to help us to build the parish hall, and is paying some of the costs for this, but we have to find the rest ourselves, about 20 thousand dollars. I told myself that Don Bosco had no money when he started the church of Mary Help of Christians ... but we have been promised 70% of the whole cost... do you not want Don Bosco to help me? So we started work ... Providence will help us.

Another dream that we want to achieve is the football team. We have registered for the Federal League. We already have a group of guys who are training every day. San Lorenzo in Argentina has become a school. With football you can save many young people from the streets, educate them and bring them to meet the Lord ... at present after last year's experience the entire football team is participating in the youth groups of the parish and preparing for Confirmation.

I needed a doctor, a lawyer and a coach and after I announced it in the parish three gentlemen came saying that they had heard of the project and wanted to volunteer. The team has already started training five times a week.

Meanwhile, all the other activities of the mission are continuing - the work to finish the youth centre, catechism classes for children, pastoral activities for women and evenings with the members of the youth group.
