Italy - Youth Ministry and Missionary Animation in Europe: time for reflection and planning

08 February 2019

(ANS - Turin) – Underway at the Salesian HQ of Turin-Valdocco from 4 to 9 February is the meeting of Youth Ministry Delegates (PG) and Mission Animation (AM) of the Provinces of Europe North and Central and Mediterranean Regions.  This is the last meeting for the Delegates of PG and AM of these two regions before the next General Chapter.

Some parts of the program see the PG and AM Delegates participate jointly in the sessions, while other parts are experienced separately, to deepen their respective animation processes.

The first day opened with the celebration of a Lectio Divina and the Eucharist. In the afternoon, the participants received the report by Fr Rossano Sala, Special Secretary of the Synod of Bishops on "Youth, Faith and Vocational Discernment". In the light of the indications gathered in the Instrumentum Laboris and the Final Document of the Synod, Fr Sala invited those present to reflect on the generative thematic nuclei of the Synod, and suggested various work itineraries.

On the second day, the PG and AM Delegates deepened their respective processes. Fr Eunan McDonnell, Provincial of Ireland, then presented a report on spiritual accompaniment and discernment; the topic was then further explored during the day, also in relation to the General Chapter 28 of the Congregation, called to discuss the theme: "Which or what kind of Salesians for today's young?"

The third day opened with the presentation of the second edition of the "Manual of Salesian Missionary Volunteering". The document, recently approved by the General Council, renews the first edition of 2008 in the light of the third edition of the "Framework for Youth Pastoral Reference", and is the fruit of three years of shared work in listening to all the Provinces.

Time was also dedicated to the presentation of the WYD experience in Panama and the Manual for the Delegate of PG, as well as to the proposal of some upcoming initiatives, such as the International Spiritual Exercises for young people (Colle Don Bosco, 23-30 April 2019), the second edition of the School for PG Delegates (Colle Don Bosco / Turin, 5-18 May 2019) and the Seminar on Salesian Spiritual Accompaniment and Affectivity (Turin, 25-30 November 2019).

On the fourth and final full day of the meeting, the group moved to Colle Don Bosco to meet with the Commission for Salesian Places and to learn about the processes underway to offering an ever better reception and usability of these places.
