RMG - World Consultation on Social Communication: which Salesian communicators for young people in the digital world?

12 February 2019

(ANS - Rome) - "Work in the field of communication develops within the Salesian mission in favor of young people, as a dimension that crosses through every educational and pastoral activity," says the Salesian Social Communication System. And why create a World Consultation Body (Consulta) on Social Communication? Fr Filiberto González, General Councilor for Social Communications, explains: "What kind of Salesian communicators do young people need in the digital world? Today more than ever we must reflect on various aspects of the communication world that touch our being Salesian at the service of young people."

Speaking of communication does not mean referring only to the media, but "living in a widely digitized culture, which profoundly affects the notion of time and space, the perception of oneself, of others and of the world, the way of communicating, learning, to be informed, to enter into a relationship with others," says the Final Document of the Synod of Bishops on "Youth, Faith and Vocational Discernment."

"The central theme of the Consulta comes from the General Chapter 28, united with the reality of the digital world: What Salesian communicators for the youth of the digital world?," adds Fr González. "On the part of the Dicastery we wish to offer to the Provincials, Delegates for Communication and Persons in charge of formation, a profile of the Salesian from the current communicative perspective. With this Salesian profile we look at the present and the future of our mission."

Twenty-four Salesians and lay people from various Salesian Provinces, experts in the sector, will attend the World Communications Council, which will take place from 21 to 24 February at the Salesian headquarters in Rome.

The work to be done during the working days is being prepared in advance. Each of the participants is called to reflect on the question: "What kind of Salesian communicators for the young people of the digital world?" To give an answer, a variety of topics shall be discussed, such as: communication in a crisis situation, the Integrated Communication Plan, diversity and quality of communication, presence in social networks, foundations of educommunication, videos for evangelization, elementary technological skills, attitudes and contents to evangelize and educate, institutional communication, charismatic foundations, and more.

"I am convinced that by motivating Salesians to grow in these aspects, we will be able to dialogue effectively with young people and current society ... And I am sure we will be able to offer the Congregation an excellent proposal for the formation and pastoral care of the Salesian communicator in the digital age," concluded the General Councilor for Social Communications.
