Italy - "Pizzoratorio": a job opportunity for young people

09 May 2019

(ANS - Torre Annunziata) - "To young people, especially the most fragile, it's not just a job that needs to be found; they must also be educated in that job by investing in their passions". These are the words of Fr Antonio Carbone, Vice-President of "Salesians per il Sociale", and current coordinator of the communities for minors "Mamma Matilde" and "Peppino Brancati" of Torre Annunziata, who every year welcome fragile minors, in a state of neglect or with problematic situations within the family of origin.

Thanks to the commitment and passion of educators and operators, these young people are followed in their schooling, trained in the world of work and accompanied in becoming responsible adults.

Young people like Pasquale who, thanks to the community, is pursuing his dream of opening a pizzeria. The boy tells us: "Even if at the beginning it was difficult to fit in, today the community is my second family. There are eight of us in the house, the youngest is nine years old and the oldest is 18: there are those who go to school, those who work and who, like me, participate in vocational training courses. One of the most beautiful things in community life is to laugh and joke with the operators, but also with the coordinators and priests who are very close to us."

Indeed, closeness remains a key element in the educational relationship, together with providing adequate formation and opportunities for integral growth. "Every morning I go to Naples for the pizza maker's lab, while in the afternoon I'm busy with the boys in the oratory," he continues.

"My dream is that of opening a pizzeria. I know it's a very demanding and tiring job but it's my passion!" the boy concludes.

To give increasingly more job opportunities to young people like Pasquale, the association "Piccoli Passi Grandi Sogni – Small Steps, Big Dreams", which coordinates the two communities of Torre Annunziata, has created a new project called "Pizzoratorio", a vocational training workshop set up in the premises of the Salesian oratory: it is basically a vocational training center that will allow participants to acquire a professional qualification as pizza maker.

"We are in a territory where there are so many difficulties and the prospects for work and commitment are also difficult," explains Don Carbone. "We want to do our best to ensure that no child is left out: thus the dream of creating this workshop that will allow many young people to move towards a better future."

The project has already received the support of "Salesians per il Sociale" and of the "DON BOSCO NEL MONDO" Foundation.
