Italy - Elisabetta Cipollone appointed Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic

30 December 2019

(ANS - Rome) - The President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, has awarded, motu proprio, thirty-two honors of the Merit of the Italian Republic to citizens, male and female, who have distinguished themselves for acts of heroism, for their commitment to solidarity, in rescue efforts, in international cooperation, in the protection of minors, in the promotion of culture and legality, for activities in favor of social cohesion, integration, research and environmental protection. Among these positive models, the Head of State also rewarded Elisabetta Cipollone, who for years has been working together with the Salesian NGO "VIS - International Volunteering for Development" in the "Un Pozzo per Andrea" project, a water well for Andrea, in Ethiopia.

The award, declares a note from the Quirinale, is assigned to celebrate "among the many examples present in civil society and institutions, several significant cases of civil commitment, dedication to the common good and testimony of republican values."

Elisabetta Cipollone lost her son Andrea a few years ago in a road accident; but instead of folding away in understandable pain, she decided to fulfill her son's dream of "bringing water to Africa", after reading this sentence in the pages of his diary.

Thus was born the collaboration with the VIS.

Since the beginning of the project, 24 wells have been built, all inaugurated personally by her, the last 7 inaugurated this year, during an expedition in March. The project will continue with the construction of other wells, although Elisabetta's ambition is to create a water point along the border line between Ethiopia and Eritrea.
