(ANS - Gumbo) - Since the beginning of the pandemic, much attention has been paid to the situation inside the Gumbo refugee camp, established in 2014 and currently run by the Salesians. The Salesian missionaries of the parish of St. Vincent de Paul, in particular, provide food, hygiene products and other basic necessities to the displaced people housed in the camp. These are mostly single women, widows, orphaned children and the elderly.

Peru - A future for the "pirañitas"

(ANS - Lima) - Peru is a country that represents a challenge for the Salesians. Along the Pacific, there is its coast characterized by a continuous desert in which the mountains that slope down to the sea are rugged, barren. Lima is located right inside this desert and is, after Cairo, Egypt, the world's second-largest city built in the desert. Then there is the Sierra which includes the entire territory of the Andes with very high peaks and populated by the Quechua, the descendants of the Inca people. The eastern part of the country instead slopes into the Amazon basin with a tropical climate and indigenous tribes that can only be reached by river as there are no roads.

A local Slovak center for Don Bosco Past Pupils offers an answer to all these questions.

(ANS - Omegna) - On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Venerable Andrea Beltrami (1870-1897) in Omegna (Verbania), his hometown, among the various initiatives organized are the blessing and inauguration of the renovated square dedicated to him. The square is located in front of the Collegiate Church of St Ambrogio where the remains of the young Salesian priest are kept. On Sunday 23 August, after the solemn Eucharistic celebration, presided over by Fr Pierluigi Cameroni, Postulator General, the inauguration of the square followed in the presence of the city authorities and the parish priest Fr Gianmario Lanfranchini.

(ANS - Rambrai) - Sixty families in six villages in the Rambrai area, India, now have photovoltaic lighting thanks to donors from “Salesian Missions”, the Salesian Mission Office of New Rochelle, USA. Their rural houses had no electricity and the children could not do their homework and study in the evenings for exams. Mothers also had a hard time getting things done at home in the evenings. The project had an impact on around 360 young people.

(ANS - Gumbo) - South Sudan is experiencing a serious economic crisis mainly due to the drop in oil prices, the devaluation of the local currency (the South Sudanese pound) and excessive dependence on imports. Commodity prices are at an all-time high and it is estimated that 5.29 million people (45% of the population) were living in conditions of severe food insecurity as of January 2020.
