China - 1920 - The photo shows Mons. Luigi Versiglia (1873-1930), Salesian bishop, martyr, declared a saint in 2000, intent on cutting the hair of a young Fr Carlo Braga (1885-1971), a Salesian missionary in China and in Philippines, Servant of God, whose 50th anniversary falls this year. This very familiar trait is a sign of the great charity that pushed Archbishop Versiglia to make himself available to his missionaries. Fr Carlo Braga himself testified: “He had truly maternal attentions for his missionaries. He visited them when they were sick, serving them personally, as I myself experienced in one of my illnesses.”

Bogotà, Colombia - 1938 - In May 1938 the Shrine of Our Lady of Carmen was inaugurated in Bogotà, designed under the guidance of Giovanni Buscaglione, architect and Salesian brother. The Shrine, together with the Salesian school “León XIII”, was declared a national monument in 1993.

Sao Paulo, Brazil - 1957 - A group of gymnasts intent on an exhibition on the occasion of the visit of the then Rector Major, Fr Renato Ziggiotti, to the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo. The photograph is part of the virtual collection of MOSB, the Museum of the Salesian work of Brazil, which can be visited through Google Arts & Culture.

Rome, Italy - 1966 - On 29 October 1966, St. Paul VI visited the new Salesian Pontifical Athenaeum, presiding over the official inauguration. He was welcomed by the Grand Chancellor and Rector Major of the Salesians, Fr Luigi Ricceri, and by Fr Gino Corallo, Rector of the University.
