The Salesian communities all over the world have been celebrating the feast day of Mary Help of Christians. Devotion to the Help of Christians is a distinctive trait of the Salesian charism and for this reason, Salesians, young people and families have paid homage to her. If last year we witnessed many "virtual" celebrations, perhaps through the screens of a smartphone or a computer, this year many faithful were able to return to celebrate this very significant date in person. Thus, in every part of the world, from Valdocco to the Palabek refugee camp, the one who “did everything” was celebrated.

Turin, Italy - May 2021 - Yesterday, Monday 24 May, starting at 6.30 pm, the Rector Major, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, presided over the Mass of the Feast Day of Mary Help of Christians in the Basilica dedicated to her in Turin. At the end of the Mass, the statue of the Help of Christians was brought to the square in front of the basilica, and here the Rector Major prayed and consecrated the city to Mary Help of Christians. For the first time, the image of Mary Help of Christians found itself without the many faithful who every year came from all over the world to pay homage to it. But, despite their physical absence, the Help of Christians was certainly not alone: from everywhere, the faithful connected to pray to her and to entrust themselves to her.

Turin, Italy - May 2021 - Yesterday, May 23, 2021, the celebrations for the Feast Day of Mary Help of Christians began in the Basilica of the same name in Turin. In compliance with the current anti-Covid regulations, Msgr. Cesare Nosiglia, archbishop of Turin, presided over the evening mass at 18:30. Later, at 8.30 pm, the Rector Major, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, presided over the recitation of the Rosary from the courtyard of Valdocco and subsequently offered the Salesian "good night". For the second consecutive year, the celebrations for Mary Help of Christians are marked by the pandemic and also this year we remember the words that Don Bosco addressed to his boys when cholera struck Turin in 1854: “You must remain calm, if you do what I tell you, you will be free from danger.” Let us continue to pray so that the Help of Christians continues to accompany and protect us.

Rome, Italy - May 2020 - On 14 May 1887, Don Bosco attended the consecration of the temple dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. On 16 May 1887, he celebrated his only Mass at the altar dedicated to Mary Help of Christians. "More than 15 times he was seen fighting to finish the Holy Mass," report the Biographical Memoirs. To assist him was Fr Carlo Viglietti, his secretary. "Don Bosco's crying greatly impressed those present and many began to cry." The painting is a work of art by Giuseppe Rollini (1887) and the altar was donated by Prince Torlonia.
