RMG - Challenges of the Team Visit: "The cries of the poor and young people touch our heart"

23 May 2017

(ANS - Rome) - The Team Visit to the Central and Northern European region, Atlantic-German zone, ended on Saturday, May 20. Rector Major, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, began the morning session with the celebration of the Eucharist. “Just two words can sum up life, our Salesian life”, he said in a serene face and firm voice-: faith and courage. Seeing the reality of our Salesian Congregation throughout the world, I can confirm that we have a Congregation full of life and hope”.

Fr Á.F. Artime insisted on these aspects for the Congregation's path: “I invite you to return to your Provinces with faith and courage. We need a great courage for doing well for the sake of the young people in the place where we are. We must listen to the cries of the poor and the young people, touching our heart. The cries of the young people who say: ‘Hey, be careful, we are here!’. And we must have the courage to visit them”.

“A second key expression for our day is to live with a vision of faith in everything we do. This vision can move us from our securities. We believe that this present time requires us more than ever a profound vision of faith”.

In the conclusions, the Rector Major said that he had perceived that a very beautiful job has been carried out in the Salesian houses of the Central-Northern European region, Atlantic-German Zone: he noted the implementation of the preferential option for the poor young people, the organization of the lay, a special attention to the young migrants and an opening to the young missionaries who have come from abroad to work in the Provinces.

Finally, he asked to consider the challenges of the present in order to be faithful to God. Thus, he indicated how we should continue growing in the awareness of the beauty of being consecrated at the service of the young; he has insisted on continuing to work with migrants, especially with young people, to whom a permanent and continuous reply must be given; he recalled to cultivate a culture of care among the young people and to devote more time to them; to strengthen and serve the missionary vocations; to pay particular attention to training. And finally, he insisted on the need for a continuous training and above all on the language learning of various European countries. “We need to prepare our young Salesians with quality, so that they can accompany the young people with quality”.
