(ANS – Panama City) – World Youth Day is one of the most loved and anticipated events at a global level. According to some data one could say that it is even more anticipated than a world cup. It is an experience that affects the entire world, and in many parts of the world where the young cannot get to the event, celebrations are organised at local level and in dioceses.

Some data and considerations confirming this.

  1. Pope Francis’ encounter with the young. The main objective of WYD is to offer a unique and special meeting between the Holy father and young people from all around the world. Nevertheless, the key players in this WYD encounter are the young people themselves who will experience many special moments with the Supreme Pontiff in reflections and Mass, during the Way of the Cross and in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
  2. There is an experience of a family atmosphere with the local Church. Few events in the world succeed in bringing so many people from so many countries together as the WYD does. Pilgrims from 150 nations have registered for the 2019 event. All together, independent of flag or language, they will take part in the activities praying, singing, dancing and celebrating the Eucharist, offering a testimony of love and mutual acceptance.
  3. Gifts are exchanged there. One of the WYD traditions is the exchange of souvenirs among pilgrims from all over the world.
  4. People learn about new cultures. Each pilgrim offers his or her culture, can get to know people from very different situations, exchange experiences and thus grow in a vision of the world.
  5. They are welcomed by families and the local Church.
  6. It is important for discerning vocations. Many have found the right way forward thanks to the WYD.
  7. It allows people to be witnesses to the faith.
  8. It allows people to explore the mystery of Christ and his Church.
  9. It allows people to experience unforgettable moments,
  10. It allows people to encounter the presence of God.
  11. It allows people to encounter new artists.
  12. It allows people to make friends for life.
  13. It allows people to come back home different.

When people come back home after experiencing the WYD, they are no longer the same. WYD broadens their view of the world, gets rid of prejudices, opens their hearts to he needs of others, motivates them to change their life and the world, in Christ, as Catholics.
