Israel – Inauguration of Academic Year of Studium Theologicum Salesianum

(ANS - Jerusalem) - On October 28, the Studium Theologicum Salesianum (STS), Jerusalem Branch of the Faculty of Theology of the Salesian Pontifical University, inaugurated its 2017-2018 academic year. Among the many participants, the Middle East Provincial, Fr Munir El Rai, and Fr Rosario Pierri, the new Dean of the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum (SBF). STS Principal, Fr Gustavo Cavagnari, opened the meeting, after which Fr Fabio Attard, General Councilor for Youth Ministry, delivered a lectio magistralis entitled: "Preparatory Document for the XV Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops and the Salesian Youth Ministry – Points of Convergence."

Subsequently, Fr Damasio Medeiros, Dean of the Faculty of Theology at SPU, honored Fr Giovanni Caputa with the conferral of Emeritus Professor status for the decades of academic service carried out with competence and humility. Fr Medeiros said: "Theological studies are carried out in order to combine Theology as scientia fidei and contemplation as hunger for scientia amoris. Theology, especially in Jerusalem, more than elsewhere, can favor this bond."

Afterwards, Fr Attard focused on the importance of the Church's mission today. "The Church," he said, "has decided to question itself on how to accompany young people towards recognizing and welcoming the call to love and life. The Church asks young people to help her effectively announce Good News." From this choice, the commitment to dedicate the XV Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on the theme: 'Young people, the Faith and Vocational Discernment.' Our task is to seize, in the synodal path, the opportunity to study and improve the processes of formation of all those involved in pastoral care, and to assess whether these processes meet the needs in the lives of today's youth."
