El Salvador - "A way of life in the midst of a history of violence": Don Bosco University

22 March 2017

(ANS - Soyapango) - The Don Bosco University (UDB) of El Salvador is located in Soyapango, San Salvador one of the areas with the greatest population density, widespread poverty and organized crime through the feared "maras" (gangs). In this context, offering university education to young adults in that region is a real sign of hope and of life for the future.

Coordinator of IUS

The UDB now has about 9,000 students, over 500 teachers, 40 undergraduate programs, nine master's and two doctoral courses.  It has become a reference point for national higher education.

Thanks to a good relationship with local businesses, good administration, cooperation with various external institutions and, in particular, a committed and professional staff, UDB now has a new curriculum and a physical and technological infrastructure of first level in the Salvadoran context, and it makes an important social impact through scientific research.

The university has some interesting experiences and offers: over 600 young people participate in a variety of formative associations (academic, cultural, sports, apostolic) which are the result of an institutional choice for the integral accompaniment of university students.

In addition, the programme includes courses with a holistic approach designed to meet particular human needs: Orthotics, Prosthetics and Biomedical; or courses that address the possibility of a very specific market, such as the Air Force. The reality of the country, then, makes the Masters for the Prevention of Youth Violence a space for reflection in terms of the objectives of peace. From the cultural point of view, the university has an art gallery containing works by different Salvadoran authors that is unique in the nation.

The Rector of UDB, Salesian Brother Mario Olmos along with his entire team continue to dream, down-to-earth, to strengthen the educational and pastoral Salesian programme, ensure economic sustainability and, above all, provide an outreach to young people of the ordinary classes.
