Can you introduce yourself?
My name is John Baptist Nguyen Viet Duc, I come from Vietnam and I belong to the Salesian Province of Vietnam. I have just graduated in Philosophy and I am entering the next stage of the formation process, namely Practical Training. But I decided to become a missionary.
What prompted you to make this choice to become a missionary?
First of all, when I was an aspirant, I read the biography of St John Bosco, as well as other books related to him, especially his stories with young people. I felt very inspired and wanted to do something for young people, like Don Bosco. During my novitiate year, I watched the films presented by the missionaries and, deep in my heart, I wanted to become like them and dedicate my life to the poor, especially in those places where there is a great need. I have only placed my desire in God's hands and wherever He wills, He can send me as a missionary.
Are you happy with where you are going?
I'm very happy with where I am going. It is God who shows me the way and will guide me in this new land, even if I know nothing about the place. I am happy to be a missionary in Romania, which will become my dream country.
Do you have any fears or concerns about the new place, culture and people?
Romania is the country where I will begin my missionary life. Of course there are many concerns, especially regarding language, culture and people, but I am quite optimistic. It will take time to learn the culture and customs, and to master the language. I fear that I will have difficulties to face, but I will try to learn and understand the culture of this country, as well as the habits in communication, and I will do my best to integrate into that culture and become a citizen of this new country. I also hope that people will accept me and consider me part of their lives.
How did family, friends, and confreres react when you told them about your missionary vocation?
When I told my family about my missionary vocation, my mother was surprised, but she simply told me, “I entrusted you to God, go where it takes you. I support your decision.” As for my friends, some have been impressed by my choice, others are worried about my future, faced with the challenges of the country I will arrive in. But they all support me and encourage my decision.
What are your plans and dreams for your missionary life?
In my missionary life I want to be a useful person and, in particular, I want to accompany and help young people to find meaning in their lives, and remind them how beautiful and worthy it is to live our lives. To do this, I will have to commit to being a trusted companion, friend, and brother to them all.
Do you have in mind some model of a great missionary whose style and life you want to follow?
The missionary who impressed me the most is Fr Germain Lagger. Due to political circumstances, he had to leave Vietnam for Ebolowa, Cameroon. He died in 2021 at the age of 87. When asked how he felt during a visit by a Vietnamese missionary, he replied, “I miss Vietnam very much and also wish I could return. But now, with all my love for Vietnam, I must put it aside to live fully for the country I am in.” And that's what I appreciate about him. Wherever I will be, I will live to the fullest on behalf of the place I will go, I will give all my love to that place and when I leave, I will not forget the precious things I have received, but this will not stop me from continuing to live and love the next country.
What is your message to young people about missionary choice and vocation?
If you are by God's side, you will find life meaningful and wonderful. Remember that when we undertake God's will, God will take care of our lives. Always enjoy life, do what you want to do, and live your life meaningfully.
