India – Marathon for promoting prevention of Substance Abuse among the Young

(ANS – Tiruchy) - Coimbatore, Aug. 24. 2016 , Don Bosco Anbu Illam, a centre working for the Rehabilitation of street and working children in Coimbatore since 1991, celebrated its Silver Jubilee Year event, ``Youngstro Marathon``, on the theme ``Ilaignane Vizhithidu Bothayai Ozhithidu``, for the cause of preventing substance abuse among vulnerable children of Coimbatore, opposite to Nehru Stadium.

The event was flagged off by Mr. T.Chrishthu Raj, District Revenue Officer, accompanied by Mr. C.R.Srikrishna, International football refree of FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association). About 800 youth from Athletic club, colleges, schools, institutions in the city and volunteers took part in the 4.8 km run.

The valedictory function featured a street play on harmful impact of substance abuse on the family and society by Bharathiyar University MSW students and Parai performance by Don Bosco Anbu illam boys.

Father Xavier, Director, Don Bosco NEST, Tiruppur addressed the gathering on substance abuse and the prizes were distributed by Mr. K.A.Kuriachen, former Rotary International District Governor, Mr. C.R.Srikrishna, International football Refree of FIFA, Mr. Srinivisan, Secretary, Coimbatore District Athletic Association, Dr.Mrs.Leema Martin, Correspondent, Martin Homeopathy Hospital, and Mr. Devaraj, Professor.

A captivating warm up dance was performed by Beethoven fitness centre, to which all the participants followed their graceful moves. The Marathon voiced the cause of their comprehensive prevention and control programme in schools and the community, targeted towards adolescents, their parents and family members towards shaping the attitude of children and to prevent risk behavior in vulnerable slum areas of Coimbatore.
