Brazil - Salesians initiate Xavante children into digital literacy

03 February 2023

São Marcos, Brazil - January 2023 - Between Jan. 9 and Jan. 29, 2023, the Salesian family of the São Marcos community offered a digital literacy course, accompanied by food support, to about 50 ethnic Xavante children, divided into different classes. In the year of the commemoration of 65 years of Salesian presence in the Indigenous Mission of São Marcos, the pilot project "Basics of Computer Science in Xavante Education" began, under the coordination of Fr. Douglas Souza, SDB, and Sister Maria Imelda, FMA, and the teaching of future novices Pablo Gomes and Henrique Belmello. Curious looks, smiles on their faces and a radiant desire to immerse themselves in virtual reality set the tone for the wonderful watercolor of the digital literacy process of the indigenous children and adolescents of the Xavante ethnic group. These were days of intense learning and conviviality among the children, missionaries, and Salesians-in-training. Through the digital platform "Grapho Game Brazil," a tool made available by the federal government through the Ministry of Education and developed in collaboration between Finnish and Brazilian educational scientists, the Xavante students went through different literacy stages, carefully prepared in a playful and attractive perspective. The initiative is being implemented with the use of 16 laptops from a donation by the Rector Major of the Salesians of Don Bosco, Fr. Ángel Fernández Artime, and his General Council.
