Argentina – Opportunities for getting to know people and for gratitude: Fr Romero's and Fr Bauer's Extraordinary Visitation to ARS continues

09 May 2024

(ANS – Buenos Aires) – Between the end of April and the first days of May, Fr Gabriel Romero, Regional Councillor for South America, and Fr Alfonso Bauer – appointed by the Rector Major, Cardinal Ángel Fernández Artime to share the Extraordinary Visitation on his behalf to the Blessed Ceferino Namuncurá Province of Southern Argentina (ARS) – continued their journeys getting to know and animate the various Salesian houses in the Province.

Fr Romero spent from 21 to 23 April in the far south of the provincial territory, at Nuestra Señora de la Merced house in Ushuaia, meeting the different teams responsible for pastoral activities, the local Salesian Family, the students at the school and the young people in the Salesian Youth Movement. "We are very happy to have been able to welcome you to share our situation under the attentive and affectionate gaze of the one who represents the Rector Major in this part of the world," they said from Ushuaia.

A similar program was also carried out in Río Grande by the Regional Councillor. There was an important opportunity to talk first-hand with the young people who give life to the experiences of service-learning, who for over 10 years have been helping children in the neighbourhood in their study and homework. Fr Romero found his visit to the church at the so-called "Candelaria" mission very moving. Today it is a national historical monument, together with the museum attached to it, which preserves important finds from the history of the first Salesian pioneers who came to Tierra del Fuego to protect the Selkmani, the original population of the area, from the threat posed by gold prospectors and breeders in the area.

At his next stop in Viedma, from 25 to 28 April, in addition to the usual business of listening to and meeting with the local Educative and Pastoral Community, especially important was his meeting with Salesian Bishop Esteban Laxague, and time for prayer and recollection before the casket with the mortal remains of Saint Artemides Zatti.

The first Salesian house in Argentine Patagonia, the one dedicated to St Joseph near Carmen de Patagones, was the subject of the visit on Tuesday, 30 April; a day on which, however, the Visitor was also able to learn about all the other projects and apostolates started in the vicinity by the Educative and Pastoral Community.

On Wednesday, 1 May, Fr Romero entered the Province of Chubut, going to the Salesian San Pedro House in Fortín Mercedes: he admired the agricultural works of the gardens and greenhouses, as well as the monument to Fr Pedro Bonacina, founder of the work, and the Regional Missionary Museum dedicated to Fr Juan Edmundo Vecchi, which houses the reconstruction of the original fort and the chapel that for years has been the location for the remains of the patron saint of the Province, Blessed Ceferino Namuncurá.

Amid the snow, on 3 and 4 May the Regional Councillor then reached the community in El Alto, near San Carlos de Bariloche, where he was shown the pastoral work in the area, which also includes specific initiatives for the indigenous Mapuche community there.

Finally, on Sunday 5 and Monday 6 May, he was in Esquel, to meet pastoral workers and young people at the St Aloysius Gonzaga Salesian house.

At the same time, Fr Bauer, Master of Novices in Montevideo, Uruguay, visited three houses in the city of Buenos Aires: Pius IX and San Francisco de Sales, in the district of Almagro, and León XIII, in the district of Palermo. "Thank you for your attentive listening and for encouraging us to take care of the project and the community, Fr Alfonso", they said from Pius IX; "We greatly appreciate your presence in our house", they also said from Almagro's second work; while from the house in the Palermo district they told him: "Thank you for your visit, being close and listening, which helps us to continue dreaming as a community".
