RMG – The Salesian Charism in the Smartphones

26 May 2016

(ANS – Roma) – The mission of the Salesian is that of being with the young: in the playground, in the school, in the oratory, in the Church, in the digital world … also in the Smartphone. The phenomenon of the Salesian-apps is constantly on the increase and represents an important channel for the transmission of the Salesian charism among the young. A study made by Mauricio Ponce from El Salvador, who helps with the graphics of the Salesian Bulletin in Central America, has discovered some very interesting facts.

From 2013 to today 80 Salesian-apps have been launched through the main digital platforms (iOS, Android) and made available throughout the world with 2015 being a “boom year” with 45 apps.

The greatest number of apps have been developed by Brazil and Italy, while the most number of downloads were evidenced with the “Edebê” Publications, Brazil and “Radio Dom Bosco”, also from Brazil, along with “Universidad Don Bosco” of El Salvador, having each one over 10.000 downloads from Android.

The majority of these apps – about 80% apps - have originated within the Salesian institutions and only about 20% among the other units of the Salesian Family.

With regard to the origin and scope of these apps, one sees that 60% have emerged from the schools and educational institutions although there are also apps to satisfy others interested in specific events like for example, “SYM DON BOSCO 2015” for the Youth Meet at Turin on the occasion of the Bicentenary; apps which are linked to special campaigns like “Pasaporte 0%” in Spain and “Una Stella” in Italy dealing respectively with the themes of consumption of alcohol and migration. Some others deal with books and magazines; 4 are about Salesian radios; 4 others deal with the mobile devises of the Salesian Bulletin – the Brazilian, Central American, Italian and Chinese editions; and two others are apps for games.
