RMG - Salesian Vocational Training: commitment and global results

12 December 2017

(ANS - Rome) - An instrument of redemption, of rebirth, of new life for thousands of young people: that's what Salesian Vocational Training means for thousands of children and young people across the globe. It is an action whose aim is to facilitate social integration and provide young people an opportunity to enter the job market on th basis of solid education, the care of - and guidance for - each and every single student and the human formation of the student.

In Ethiopia, for example, the Salesians have created the vocational schools of Adwa and Makallè which hopes to play a fundamental role in preventing and combating the dramatic phenomenon of migration and human trafficking.

The top priority and objective of Salesian education and formation in Ethiopia is to give children indispensable tools for not falling victim to the mirage of a better tomorrow in distant lands, where their hopes are soon transformed into a destiny of abuse, exploitation, delinquency and slavery.

In Medellín, Colombia, the commitment of the Sons of Don Bosco aims to help the most vulnerable children to escape from poverty, from life on the streets and, in many cases, even from the guerrillas who force them to grow in a state of terror, deprivation, and despair. For many, the chance at a new life happens through the love and care of a community that is attentive and professionally trained, but also through what is offered at "Ciudad Don Bosco", for example, with its vocational courses ranging from jobs in the hotel industry to tailoring, from mechanics and machinery to graphic arts.

Lastly, in South Vietnam, in Vinh Long, young people at a high risk of marginalization are welcomed at CFP "Dong Thuan" where they find the opportunity to alter their destinies. Students often face contexts of severe decay and broken families, or they belong to ethnic minorities that are more or less openly discriminated against; from the Salesians, the youngsters are offered the opportunity to “be someone” through study and work with educators who are capable of accompanying them on their journey to become skilled, responsible adults.

With a long history of commitment and successes behind it, Salesian Vocational Training is characterized as a path whose aim is the growth and inner enrichment of each young person, to make them responsible citizens and workers well-adapted and set inside the workplace closest to him or her.
